DoorDash Air Gets FAA Approval for Drone Delivery

DoorDash Air earned FAA Part 135 approval, marking a major step for in-house drone delivery and a faster last-mile model for local merchants.

DoorDash drone delivery is moving closer to becoming part of the company’s regular delivery network. In a new announcement, DoorDash said its DoorDash Labs division received Federal Aviation Administration Part 135 air carrier certification. The company is also launching DoorDash Air, its own drone delivery program.

For Dashers and other delivery drivers, the biggest question is what this means for the future of delivery work. DoorDash is no longer treating drones as just an experiment. The company is working toward a delivery system that could use drivers, robots, autonomous vehicles, and drones depending on the type of order.

Why the FAA approval matters

The FAA certification is an important part of this story. DoorDash says it has already completed tens of thousands of drone deliveries, but Part 135 certification gives the company a more formal path for operating package delivery by air.

One important part of the announcement is that DoorDash is not presenting drones as a complete replacement for Dashers.

Instead, DoorDash says it wants to use several types of delivery within the same network. That includes Dashers, autonomous delivery partners, DoorDash’s Dot delivery vehicle, and drones.

The basic idea is simple. Different deliveries require different tools.

A small food order traveling a short distance might work well for a drone. A delivery going to a large apartment complex may still require a driver who can enter the property, find the correct building, and bring the order to the customer’s door.

The same applies to grocery orders, large packages, alcohol deliveries, orders requiring identification, and other deliveries that require direct customer contact.

DoorDash appears to be moving toward a system where the platform decides which delivery method makes the most sense for each order.

Which deliveries could drones take?

This is probably the part drivers should watch most closely.

Drones are likely to work best with smaller orders that can travel short or medium distances. These could include restaurant meals, convenience items, and other lightweight products.

These are also some of the same deliveries that Dashers complete today.

However, drones have limits. Weather, distance, weight, airspace restrictions, landing or drop-off locations, and local operating rules can all affect whether an order can be delivered by drone.

A drone may work well when delivering to a house with an approved drop area. The situation becomes much harder when the customer lives on the fifth floor of an apartment building, works inside an office tower, or provides complicated delivery instructions.

Drivers remain much more flexible in those situations.

Could drones change delivery demand?

There is another side to this story. Drone delivery could take some orders away from drivers, but it could also help DoorDash increase the total number of deliveries on the platform.

DoorDash says its average drone delivery time was about 25 minutes in 2025. The company also says some pilot locations experienced roughly a 30% increase in order volume after drone delivery launched, with higher volume continuing in the following weeks.

If drone delivery encourages customers to order more often, the effect on drivers could be more complicated than simply losing deliveries to drones.

For example, drones could handle some small and easy orders while drivers handle larger, longer, or more complicated deliveries. Increased customer demand could also create additional orders throughout the delivery network.

It is still too early to know how that balance will work as DoorDash Air expands.

Drivers should pay attention to order quality

For Dashers, the number of available orders is only part of the equation. The type of orders left for drivers also matters.

If drones eventually handle more short-distance and lightweight deliveries, drivers could receive a larger share of orders involving apartments, heavier items, longer distances, difficult parking, or complicated drop-offs.

That could change how drivers judge an offer.

A delivery paying the same amount may not be equally profitable if one order requires ten minutes of apartment searching, parking, elevator time, or customer communication.

Drivers should therefore watch more than the total number of orders. Pay, mileage, delivery difficulty, waiting time, and the types of orders being offered will be important as automated delivery expands.

Why DoorDash wants different delivery options

From DoorDash’s point of view, having several delivery methods gives the company more flexibility.

Drivers are affected by traffic, parking, restaurant delays, road closures, and driver availability. Drones have their own limits, including weather, payload size, airspace, and suitable delivery locations.

Instead of depending on one method for every order, DoorDash wants the ability to choose between them.

During a busy dinner rush, for example, drones could potentially complete some nearby deliveries while Dashers handle orders that need a person. That could give DoorDash additional delivery capacity without depending completely on the number of available drivers.

What DoorDash Air means for Southern California drivers

Southern California is an important market to watch because delivery drivers already deal with heavy traffic, long distances, crowded restaurant areas, apartment complexes, and difficult parking.

Those conditions give delivery companies a strong reason to experiment with other ways of moving orders.

At the same time, many Southern California deliveries are complicated. Dense neighborhoods, gated communities, apartments, businesses, hills, weather conditions, restricted areas, and long travel distances can make a simple point-to-point drone delivery difficult.

That means human drivers still provide something automated systems struggle with: flexibility.

This is not the end of delivery driving

It would be easy to look at DoorDash Air and conclude that drones are about to replace delivery drivers. DoorDash’s own announcement describes a different strategy.

The company is building a delivery network that uses different methods for different jobs.

That does not mean drivers should ignore the change. Automation is becoming a larger part of delivery, and it could affect which orders drivers receive, where drivers are needed, and how platforms calculate delivery efficiency.

Drivers should watch how these programs develop instead of assuming that nothing will change or that drivers will disappear overnight.

The bigger change is how DoorDash builds its network

The most important part of DoorDash Air may not be the drone itself.

The bigger change is DoorDash building a delivery network where an order could be assigned to a person, a robot, an autonomous vehicle, or drone based on what the platform believes is the best option.

For drivers, that makes understanding the delivery business more important. Drivers will need to pay attention to which orders remain profitable, which markets have strong demand, and how technology changes the type of work available.

DoorDash says more information about its aircraft and the wider DoorDash Air rollout will be released later this year.

For now, DoorDash Air should be viewed as another sign that delivery is changing. Drivers are still a major part of the system, but they are increasingly sharing that system with new technology.

The question for delivery drivers is no longer whether automation will enter the industry, but rather which deliveries automation can handle well, which deliveries still need a person, and how drivers can adapt as the network changes.
