What’s Going On?
In October 2025, Uber introduced a new feature called Digital Tasks. It lets drivers earn money by doing online jobs like labeling data, checking images, or reviewing short pieces of information.
These small digital jobs are available inside the Uber Driver app under a new “Earning Opportunities” section.
According to Axios and CNBC, Uber wants drivers to keep earning even when they’re not driving. The idea is that during slow times, such as between lunch and dinner rushes, drivers can complete these digital microtasks right from their phones.
Uber says this feature allows drivers to “contribute to AI development while unlocking new income.” The program connects workers to technology companies that need people to help train artificial intelligence by providing correct examples of text, images, or sounds.
Gig work has changed quickly in the past few years.
Two major problems have affected the industry: automation and income gaps.
Automation means machines and software are starting to replace some of the work humans used to do, like driving, sorting packages, or making deliveries. This creates uncertainty for many drivers about future job security.
Income gaps happen when work demand slows down, leaving drivers waiting for the next order. Digital Tasks gives Uber a way to help workers fill those slow periods. Instead of waiting for delivery requests, they can earn through quick digital jobs.
We recently wrote an article on Multi-apping, which is a strategy currently used to fill downtime between gigs. You can read the article here.
Uber’s move also helps the company. It keeps drivers active on the platform longer and creates a new way to make money. At the same time, it gives Uber a place in the growing AI training market, which depends on people to teach computers how to think and recognize patterns.

Implications for Uber Drivers Training AI Data
For many drivers, this could be a helpful change. It allows them to make use of their downtime and earn without spending money on gas or vehicle maintenance.
Benefits include:
- Ability to work anywhere with a smartphone.
- Direct payments through the Uber system, no extra apps required.
- A chance to learn about the growing AI field.
Possible drawbacks:
- Pay per task may be small compared to delivery or rideshare income.
- Availability might depend on city or driver status.
- It raises new questions about how gig workers are classified and protected.
- You may be training your replacement
Still, it’s a creative way for drivers to stay productive. Someone sitting in a parking lot waiting for their next Uber Eats order can now complete a few digital tasks and earn a little extra.
Current Trends in Gig Work and Technology
Uber’s Digital Tasks fits with several trends shaping gig work in 2025 and 2026. These trends were highlighted in Hot Topics in Delivery Driver Apps and Apps That Help Gig Workers Stay Busy.
1. Super Apps
A super app combines several services under one roof. Uber, DoorDash, and others are working to become all-in-one hubs where workers can deliver food, give rides, shop, and now complete online tasks.
2. AI and Automation
Delivery and rideshare apps are using AI to predict busy times, assign routes, and suggest ways to earn more.
3. Multi-App Work
Many gig workers use several apps at once, a method called multi-apping, as mentioned earlier. They switch between Uber, DoorDash, Grubhub, and other apps to stay busy.
Uber’s new system brings some of that flexibility inside its own platform.
4. Worker Empowerment
Gig workers continue to call for more transparency, fair pay, and better working conditions. Digital Tasks adds flexibility but may also spark new debates about fair wages for digital labor.
5. Blending Physical and Digital Work
The future of gig work may include both physical and online tasks. A driver could start their day delivering orders, complete digital labeling work in the afternoon, and return to deliveries at night. The border between tech work and gig work is becoming less clear.
How to Get Started With Uber Digital Tasks
Here’s what to do if you want to try Digital Tasks:
- Open your Uber Driver App. Look for a new section called “Digital Tasks” or “Earning Opportunities.” The rollout is happening across major U.S. cities.
- Verify your profile. Uber may ask for updated ID or short training videos to make sure data quality is high.
- Review each task before you accept. The app shows how long it takes and how much you’ll earn.
- Start small. Try a few tasks to understand how they work. Payments will appear with your regular Uber earnings.
- Check back often. Uber plans to add more types of digital work, such as product tagging, customer support labeling, and AI content reviews. You can read the latest details on Uber’s Digital Tasks blog
Looking Ahead
Digital Tasks marks a turning point for Uber and the gig economy. It connects driving, delivery, and online work in one app. Over time, more drivers could use both physical and digital gigs to manage their schedules and income.
It also raises larger questions. If workers are now completing both in-person and online jobs under one platform, will future labor laws treat them differently? These are the kinds of discussions that will shape the next wave of gig-work reform.
For now, Digital Tasks gives drivers something valuable—more options. Whether you’re waiting for a ride request, between deliveries, or just looking to boost your daily total, Uber’s newest feature turns idle time into opportunity.
As the 2025–2026 delivery trends report stated, “Staying ahead means adapting fast to new technology and regulations while staying focused on efficiency and user experience.” Uber’s Digital Tasks is the latest example of how fast that change is happening.
